Our mobile sandblasting service can clean any surface from brick, stone to metal or concrete. Rust, paint, graffiti or other environmental damage can be easily cleaned with sandblasting.

Sandblasting Applications

Sandblasting is used to clean surfaces, remove rust, oxidation, or finishes and to prepare surfaces for new coating applications.

Sandblasting involves use of a specialized blasting machine propels abrasive media at high velocity via compressed air onto the surface to be cleaned. This process thoroughly removes the material without harming the substrate. We choose our blasting media to be purpose specific using different densities, abrasives, and sizes based on the required cleaning application.

Manufacture of PCBs was terminated as we entered the 1980s but only after evidence that this dangerous class of compound had serious health effects and that they build up in the environment.

The Harmful Health Effects of PCBs

Extensive study on the health effects of PCBs showed that they are a potential carcinogen. This cancer causing agent does not break down in the environment and tends to collect in fish species exposed to water containing PCBs. For this reason it is important that PCBs do not get spilled onto the ground where they are then taken into the ground water system.

Other adverse health effects from PCB exposure include harm to the reproductive system in adults and the potential for neurological development issues in children. In adults exposure to PCBs may be linked to other neurological problems such as numbness, limb pain and headaches. Frequent infections, skin rashes, skin thickening and deformed nails have also been documented as symptoms of PCB exposure.

Sources Of PCBs

PCBs are an entirely man made compound and are not found naturally in the environment, however they are found in the fatty tissues of many wildlife including fish because of their persistence when released into the environment.

PCB Exposure

Concentrated PCBs are most often oily liquids. They can also be solids. They can range from colourless to light yellow in colour. They have no smell or taste. A popular manufacturer of PCBs named their product Aroclor. This product often shipped in drums. If you have these drums on your property it is possible they may have leaked into the soil and will need professional remediation to prevent environmental contamination.

PCBs made for good insulating material and were fire resistant. These properties made them good coolants and lubricants in transformers, capacitors and other electrical equipment. These compounds still exist in many workplaces due to their widespread use before the health effects were discovered. Fluorescent lighting fixtures, electrical appliances, old microscope oil and hydraulic fluids may be sources of PCBs in your workplace.

Often materials visibly show that they are classified as dangerous. Elemental mercury appears as a shiny liquid metal, asbestos fibres in pipe wrap - but sometimes sample testing must be conducted to find out if the material is dangerous.

On Site Testing

Some of the materials we deal with are often odourless, colourless or have been absorbed into the soil or water on a property. When we are dealing with this type of contaminant or contamination, we extract samples and send them to our independent laboratory to see if they pose environmental or human health dangers.

Mercury exists in two different forms and they are both dangerous and have potential health effects: organic mercury (methylmercury) or elemental metallic mercury. Exposure to either of these can have serious neurolgical side effects.

The Harmful Health Effects of Mercury

When mercury is emitted into the environment from industrial processes it can get into the soil and water where it soon finds its way to fish and wildlife. Consumption of fish exposed to water contaminated with mercury can lead to loss of vision, numbness in hands and feet, or around the mouth, difficulty with coordination and movement, muscle weakness and speech impairment.

Infants and children are particularly susceptible to mercury and in particular brain and nervous system development. Children exposed to mercury in the womb can be subject to memory, cognitive thinking, language, fine motor skills and visual skills difficulties.

Direct exposure to metallic mercury and the resulting inhalation of the vapour can cause kidney failure, respiratory failure and death.

Sources Of Mercury

Mercury compounds were widely used as fungicides, preservatives, antiseptics or disinfectants. It is very important that these compounds do not get into the soil. If you have any of the previously listed product types that are outdated, check their labels for indications of "mecuro-" or the elemental name "Hg"

Elemental mercury is the only metal that is a liquid at room temperature. This unique property made it useful in gauges and meters. Depending on the age of some of your equipment, elemental mercury may be present in many of your gauges. If a gauge breaks, elemental mercury is very difficult to clean up as it moves like a liquid and can split into droplets when containment is attempted.

Mercury Exposure

Organic mercury or methyl mercury as is found in fungicides and preservatives is readily absorbed through the skin and should never be handled with bare skin. This type of mercury is the most dangerous because of how easily it is absorbed into the body through skin contact or inhalation. Symptoms of mercury exposure may take weeks to develop and include tremors, headaches, short-term memory loss, loss of appetite and altered sense of taste and smell

Elemental mercury from thermometers, gauges and other equipment is not readily absorbed through the skin but produce vapours immediately after released from their casing. With elemental mercury, the inhalation of vapours is the inherent danger.

Dry ice blasting can be used in situations and industries where a clean end result is required that does not leave sand or water from conventional blasting media.

Dust Containment Issues Resolved

Dry ice blasting is a great solution to the problem of residual water or sand grit from conventional blasting materials. Because it is a cleaner way of blasting it can be used in more sensitive industries like food processing, disaster restoration and manufacturing where conventional sand grid might affect the equipment or final product.

Use dry ice blasting for cleaning and removing production residues, oils, mould, fire & smoke damage, biofilms, paints, contaminants and is used mostly for cleaning machinery, food equipment and sensitive electronic equipment.

How Does It Work?

Dry ice blasting is a new process that takes advantage of the boiling point and freezing point property of CO2 (carbon dioxide). This process uses solid CO2 or "dry ice" pellets as the blasting media. The dry ice pellets sublimate once they've hit the surface to be cleaned meaning they go right from solid ice, to vapour and skip the liquid phase completely. This leaves a clean, dry surface with no residue after the blasting is complete.

Effective For Mould Removal

Mould requires direct and complete cleaning in order to remove existing spores and inhibit future growth. Any matter that can support growth and all existing spores need to be removed to ensure the problem does not reoccur. The high pressure blasted dry ice is at temperatures of -78C. These amazing deep freeze temperatures result in the mould shrinking and detaching itself from the surface and any other spores to be terminated. Dry ice blasting is an effective and clean restoration process for residential, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings when it comes to mould problems.

Dry ice blasting is a cleaning tool for the quick recovery from fire or smoke damage this process is highly effective on restoring indoor brick or outdoor stone.
